Sometimes the grout is damaged beyond repair and it can not be effectively cleaned to make it look good. When this happens it is time for a more aggressive grout restoration technique to get the grout looking like new again. For ceramic and porcelain tile installations including tile floors, countertops a grout colorant restoration procedure is the most effective way to restore the grout. It is not recommended to apply a grout colorant to porous stone tile grout including slate, limestone, and marble.
The grout colorant restoration procedure begins with an effective cleaning of the grout.
The grout must be thoroughly cleaned to remove all the dirt, grease and grime from grout so that the grout colorant will have good adhesion to the grout. It is also recommended to clean the grout with a mild urea acidic cleaner prior to applying the grout colorant. The mild acidic cleaner will open up the pores of the grout and make the grout colorant stick to the grout much better.

After the grout is thoroughly cleaned and dried you can apply the grout colorant with a toothbrush or other specialized grout colorant applicator.
Usually the grout colorant manufacturer will provide the proper grout colorant applicators but a small toothbrush will work just fine. Apply the grout colorant in small sections of the tile and then go back with a damp towel or chamois cloth and wipe off the grout colorant from the tile surface. Do not let the grout colorant dry too long on the tile surface or it will be extremely difficult to remove.

After you have completed a section of the grout colorant restoration procedure move on to the next section.
Always go over each section thoroughly to make sure you have removed all the grout colorant from the tile surface. It is ok to leave the grout colorant haze on the tiles as this can be wiped off later when you are done with the entire floor.
When you have finished with the grout restoration procedure go back over the entire surface with a damp towel and wipe up all the grout colorant haze.
You should be able to see that your grout looks as good or better then new.

A grout colorant application is an excellent way to restore your grout and make your whole tile installation look like new.
The grout colorant will make the grout have an even appearance and make cleaning your grout as simple as wiping it with a damp cloth. This grout restoration procedure will also seal the grout so that cleaning your floor is extremely easy. By just using a pH neutral cleaning solution you can simply mop away dirt and grime from your grout. Additionally there are many colors of grout colorants to choose from so that if you were never happy with the color of your grout you can change it to virtually any color you desire.
